HOW IT WORKS
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Do I need to be a veteran to apply?
While we acknowledge that there are all sorts of people that could benefit from a service dog, our program is only for U.S. veterans.
So yes, you must be a veteran or applying on a veteran's behalf to apply.
What happens after I submit my application?
We will review your application, and if you are approved to move forward in the process, we'll contact you with the next round of application paperwork.
Can I put a vest on my pet and call it a service animal?
Absolutely not. We provide specially trained service dogs. Service dogs are not Emotional Support Animals or Therapy Dogs. While these other types of animals can bring people comfort, they do not have the same public access rights as service dogs and are not task-trained to help someone with a disability.
The Americans with Disabilities Act (28 CFR 36.104) defines the term "service animal" as "any guide dog, signal dog, or other animal individually trained to provide assistance to an individual with a disability."
Can my pet be trained to be my service dog?
In some cases, we can train a dog you already have. However, this requires additional testing,
as not all dogs are suited for service work.
Can a service dog go with me everywhere?
Under the ADA, State and local governments, businesses, and nonprofit organizations that serve the public generally must allow service animals to accompany people with disabilities in all areas of the facility where the public is allowed to go.
How long does training take?
Training generally takes two years. If we feel that the veteran would benefit from starting with a puppy, the veteran can start training as soon as we find a suitable pup. If the veteran would benefit more from a slightly older dog, AGS will train the puppy for the first year, and then Hands Full and the veteran will take over training.
